View Full Version : Rakim or Nas

I'm having a debate with my cousin, I believe that Rakim is the better emcee, but his ignorant ass refuses to give him any credit. Who do you think is the better emcee? Rakim or Nas? Thanks.
Nas has more range and depth in his songwriting, and a more nuanced delivery. At this point, he's also shown greater longevity than Rakim, who had an amazing 5 year run, but hasn't dropped an album since 1999, and hasn't dropped a great album since the early 90's (The 18th Letter was only good, in my opinion, and the Master was only so-so).
Sure, someone can of course say, accurately, that Nas wouldn't have a style without Rakim. But, that doesn't mean he can't surpass him, like Rakim surpassed his predecessors. Nas took Rakim's style, mixed in some Kool G Rap, and some unique Nas, and he's run off with it.

I think Nas has the edge just because of his longevity. Rakim only has 2 albums (solo that is) compared to Nas' 9. Plus Nas got more classic songs.

time is completely irrelevant in this discussion but

And add 7 more brothas who think they can rhyme
Well, it’ll take 7 more before I go for mine

he reused it to perfect it*. krs drops an album every year while nas drops one every 2 years and you still claim krs as ur number 2. so youre a hypocrite for saying that. also nas comes out with albums when he has something to say, and he gets it out. if it takes rakim ten years to do so, then he obv isnt capable of dropping an album

the difference is that you never hear about krs's albums, he has no major backing. Nas puts out albums for SALES that's it. Illmatic and Stillmatic were sick, all his other albums were straight trash. If i could quote someone in this thread, Rakim would tear Nas a new a**hole.

you never hear about them cuz krs sucks compared to nas. you hear about nas cuz people expect them. he doesnt do it for the sales cuz he's said, he doesnt care if he sells one or one million copies. nas's first 3 albums were straight classic. stillmatic was too. and so was untitled. rakim isnt tearing anyone a new a**hole until he's able to drop an album

1. u call anybody that doesnt like rakim ignorant
2. i give him the credit he deserves, you def overrate him. he def isnt the goat
This is a hard decision for me but, I gotta go with Nas. i've seen both these guys perform together in concert at Rock The Bells. During the show The hosts announce that Rakim was in a car accident (most likely BS he was just running late), and when he finally shows 2 hrs later with Kid Capri he starts his show off with "don't sweat the technique" then he abruptly stops because of problems with the sound system. After numerous attempts to perform. Both Kid Capri & Rakim get really irritated and tells the crowd they gotta jam outta there. Can't say i blame hem though I would’nt wanna perform when the music is pumping out nothing but distorted bass and static crap. So they tried a few minutes after they left and had it working no problem....not impressed but hey I guess it happens, Nas puts on a soild performance but i did notice alot of voice overs that i did'nt notice for other performers mostly for his chorus. But trying to make an unbiased choice and judging just from their albums I think Nas has a bt more of a mello and relaxed style which appeals to me a bit more.

nope just you because your stupid, how you going to give him credit and say that his albums with Eric B. aren't good lyrically? Have you ever heard them or do you just skim through them? Rakim is like the Michael Jordan of rap, not only was he the greatest basketball player(rapper) but also an ambassador for the game, they both changed their respective professions in a way that no one has before or will ever. That's why he is the GOAT

you dont understand that rap was fairly new when rakim came out, he did change the rap game ill give him that but so did alot of other people in that era. i have heard them and i think dont sweat the technique was their best one based on lyrics. the majority of his work with eric b on those albums had nursery rhyme lyrics. thats why i say u can only compare his 2 solo albums to any of nas's work lyrically. illmatic changed the game more than rakim did, rappers had to step their game up after illmatic.

The student will never be better the teacher. Nas, is a good MC as matter of fact he is in my top 10. Rakim is the greatest, too many MCs stole for him. Shall I name MC's. To me is it like asking is "Kobe better than Micheal", Kobe can win 10 rings and he will never be better than Mike. Im sorry Nas but I think it was 2pac who said "Nas your style was bitten......Rakim".

is that even a question?
ya it is because Rakim's albums changed the game what did Nas' albums ever do for the game? And don't give me that sh*t about Illmatic being the first album with no FAMOUS guest appearances, Nas did it by himself. In Paid in Full Rakim had no guest appearances period, unless you count Eric B. who said all of like 300 words through the whole four albums, and that sh*t was in '86. Illmatic came out in '94.

nas has more range and depth in his songwriting, and a more nuanced delivery.

I wouldn't say he changed this game cuz the game was still being formed in the 80's. He set the bar for rap but nas most definitely perfected what was started. You mean to tell me Paid in Full>>>Illmatic? It was great at that era, not compared to what rap turned into.

i must say, props to this thread
finally a debate worth talking, non of this 'drake vs. gucci mane' sh*t
anyways, i think nas is better. He has more replay value to his songs in general and a far larger catologue. Whoever said the student is never better than the teacher, sorry but thats just false. Just cause you are a teacher doesnt mean you necessarily know the sh*t youre teaching. Not saying rakim didnt know what he was teaching, obviously its the exact opposite, but teaching someone and being the best are very different things. Would he be the same without Rakim? Obviously not. But thats not the argument
Nas is the better of the two. I personally dont believe there is a best of all time, but I supposed at gun-point id say nas.
