By now we have all recieved a government issued document called a census. Im not sure if anyone else has really seen this or come to realization of it. NEGRO, is one of the terms used to categorize African Americans. So, if you are an African American and are going to check this as your race, remember, your a negro? Under US definition that is. Why are they still using this term and should it be acceptable? thoughts... :angry2: or :laughing2:

Uh... last I remember "negro" means "black" in Spanish -- maybe you're reading the Spanish version of the Census :shrug:
Either way, racist? That's a bit of a reach... unless calling someone black in any other language but English is racist nowadays? I don't keep up with the times.

I do feel that the census is a bit intrusive, it should be a slip that asks you how many people are living in your home? with an optional section or something, required though, and up to 5000 in fines...

They do it for research. I was told that all the information you provide is 100% private and can't be used by any other bureau or in court, etc. -- I'm not gonna talk out my ass as if I know the specifics of it and the reasoning behind it, but if they can't use any of the information you give them against you, then there's no harm in just filling it out. :shrug:

The census hasn't been through many changes and lots of older people are used to that term, its hard to select/recognize something else when you've been selecting that all your life, I'm sure in time it'll be modified.

Actually, information from the Census was used in WWII to round up Japanese-Americans and put them into internment camps, so what you proposed is very possible.

i worked for the census goin door to door getting ppl to fill the sh*t out, made good money to, but none the less they didnt even explain much to us in training so yea, but i doubt its racist.

Fair enough, but you can't compare 1945 to 2010, bro. Needless to say, 2 completely different eras. The gov't is far from fair and balanced, but I think people are getting too paranoid over this Census stuff.

I filled it out the other day and it kind of bothered me that they are trying to lump hispanics in with white.... I've only seen that on the census, every othe form they have hispanic under a different category.

There's no difference. It could happen today just as easily. In fact, it could happen even easier because now they have GPS coordinates to every residence in America. A nighttime raid could happen and you would never know because it would be so precise. America's 'freedom' is a complete illusion.

In my opinion, the reasoning behind the term Negro is to put African-Americans, Blacks, and other people of color in the same category. I identify myself as being African American, where as some of my friends identify as black. They believe they are not African and can't trace there roots back that far.

Negro is a rediculous way to classify a race....almost as rediculous as African American. Sorry but unless your parents or grandparents are from Africa, you're not African American. White people with European decent are not listed as Eurpoean Americans because the logic behind it all is fu*kin stupid. Stop the bullsh*t...we are all Americans that happen to have different shades. Get over it.
And yes the census is complete and total bullsh*t. They have spent millions upon millions of dollars of our tax money in order to be able to classify everyone based on race and location. I know it can't compare to the 14 BILLION dollars a month we spend on the "war" but for fu*k sake its fu*king criminal.

Nah, I was just kidding about that. I'm sure "negro" was intended. Like I said before, I don't see what's so racist about "negro" -- they're asking you if you're black or not, that's it. I dunno much else about the Census, maybe there are OTHER parts that might be racist, but "negro" isn't in my opinion.

I start working for the 2010 Census at the end of April (door to door).
How was the training and the job?
Did it take long for you to get paid for the training?

First, lets address the Race thing , to be techinical there is one RACE of Humans on the planet as we speak the other two "Cro-Magnon" and "Neanderthal" and they are both extinct.
Second, the word "Negro" which does mean "Black" in spanish but over time in America has been coined and used as a slander towards people of color. But if the Census said White or Cracker, White or Redneck , White or Pinkskin etc..... there would be a issue because Americans of European desent would be offended, where is the difference all the terms or racist slander.
Third , I myself am an American of color and yes I can trace my family history back to Africa , but no I do not feel nor see myself as African American and should not be forced to label myself as one the same way Europeans who have been in America far less time then my family are not forced to label themselves as Russian Americans or British Americans or German Americans etc...... they aren't even given the option, in America they are White or American. The colored Americans are labeled Black or African Americans , Latino Americans. Why aren't Colored Americans given the respect of just being Americans like everybody else.

okay, so we've decided that the terms "african american", "black", "negro", and "colored" are all intolerable classifications for census purposes. the what the hell SHOULD the label be? should it say "not white"? lol. i personally think that "black" is the best of the above choices. african american is too vague, and colored/negro both have bad conotations from the pre-civil rights era. basically anything they put as a label next to the box is gonna sound racist to somebody, so i think it is up to the black community to figure out what the hell they should be called, and then everyone should try to respect that decision. but this changing of titles every 10 years is dumb and just confounds the problems we as a nation of AMERICANS still seem to have about not only our own identities, but also the identities of others.
