Mel Gibson is taking a stab at saving his movie career with a comedy role as a tattoo artist in "The Hangover 2."

The troubled star, who was dropped by the William Morris Endeavor agency in July and has also faced allegations that he assaulted and made threats against his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, has signed to play a Bangkok tattooist in the highly anticipated comedy.

A source told Page Six, "It's a done deal. Mel will make a cameo as a tattoo artist. Filming is taking place on the Warner Bros. lot, where a Bangkok set has been built, and Mel is expected to film his role in two weeks. Then the production moves to Thailand at the end of October."

The sequel to the wildly successful 2009 "The Hangover" will follow the gang, played by Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zack Galifianakis and Justin Bartha, as they take a boys' trip to Thailand with a dangerous stop in Bangkok. Asian gangster Mr. Chow, played by Ken Jeong, will also return.

It is not known if Gibson's "Hangover 2" character will reference his current real-life problems. But the original movie did much to reinvent Mike Tyson's image from a troubled drug user into a comedic actor.

The Los Angeles district attorney reportedly is still deciding whether to charge the 54-year-old actor, who allegedly attacked Grigorieva while she had their daughter in her arms, with domestic violence.

Gibson's movie with Jodie Foster, "The Beaver," is still to be released, but no date has been announced.

Foster said of him recently, "Mel is an undeniably gifted actor and director, and 'The Beaver' is one of his most powerful and moving performances. But more importantly, he is and has been a true and loyal friend. I hope I can help him get through this dark moment."

A rep for Gibson declined to comment, and Warner Bros. did not get back to us.
